MIDNIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE REVIEW: Sex Hunter:1980/Nurse Girl Dorm: Sticky Fingers

Every once in awhile I get the urge to review some smut. Typically there's more to it to the films than a collected series of strange puerno scenes fixed together with a loose, inconsequential plot. There's substance in the performances both sexual and traditional acting. There production value is clearly better than home video, and it would seem that the majority of those movies comes courtesy of either Vinegar Syndrome or Impulse. Today we're going to talk about a series that we're going to begin covering, typically in double feature format, reviews posted late at night (because they're naughty) and with about as much actual critical esteem as can be mustered for movies that are commonly conceived of as pure Asian skin flicks... or at least they are tonight. Tonight we're here to discuss Nurse Girl Dorm: Sticky Fingers and Sex Hunter: 1980 from Impulse Pictures. These releases are part of the infamous Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection.

(Note: these movies are dirty filthy porno flicks no matter what critical output I attach to them. They're funny, but serious and naughty naughty naughty.)

SEX HUNTER: 1980

Synopsis from Impulse Pictures:

Miki, a young and talented ballet dancer, is accepted into an exclusive, and very private, academy run by a mysterious woman named Kaibara Akiko. Miki wants to further her dance education and rekindle her relationship with her boyfriend, but soon discovers all the horrible perversions forced upon the academy students. She is subjected to constant violent sexual acts and torture and realizes there may be no escape! With similar tones to Italian horror maestro Dario Argento’s masterwork SUSPIRIA, SEX HUNTER: 1980 is one of the more controversial entries in the Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection. The depictions of disturbing sexual violence so concerned Nikkatsu studios, they actually warned director Toshiharu Ikeda to tone things down for his next film!

My first impression of Sex Hunter: 1980 was that it seemed to be some kind of psycho sexually charged Suspiria piece which is funny because that's exactly how it was marketed. I can honestly say that I don't go into these movies reading the back cover or even the marketing material associated with flick until after I watch the movie. I want to be able to come a move that is as strange as Sex Hunter: 1980 with a clear head, open and ready to have my blank slate filled (that's not an innuendo of any kind).

Overall I think I've seen movies that are far more shocking and more sexually violent than 1980's Sex Hunter, but it's has a certain pretty quality that makes it watchable while trying to shock. It's slightly disturbing. Slightly. More or less you're looking at a movie that was filmed over 30 years old whose historical context is more important than the online screen stimuli. The liner notes from Japanese Film Scholar Jasper Sharp will help to cement it's place in this particular subgenre.

For a pubic hair addict like myself, this is a censored mess.

NURSE GIRL DORM: STICKY FINGERS

Synopsis from Impulse Pictures:

There’s a new group of horny young ladies working at St. Elizabeth Hospital and they’re all looking for love. These nurses are watched over by a fairly strict dorm supervisor, but with the help of the mysterious Yuki, they are able to sneak in their boyfriends for nightly sex. Yuki is a terrible influence on the girls, but she sure knows how to have fun! When a bandaged man walks into the hospital looking for Yuki, her past is revealed. His name is Tadao and he was secretly married to Yuki. He wants to rekindle their failed relationship, but she has other ideas. On one strange night, the boyfriends, Tadao and many others all converge at the hospital for a night of hot sex, mistaken identity, crazy disguises, S&M and… vaginal cramps!

To call Nurse Girl Dorm: Sticky Fingers a sex comedy would be accurate. It was made in 1985 on the heels of the American sex comedy band wagon and features some very strange pairings and sexual situations. One might equate this to a typical late 70's style porn film with plenty of humor mixed with some hardcore sequence some of which might be found moderately disturbing.

Overall you can laugh at NGD, but taking it seriously is another matter altogether. Yes, we have a bombastic orgy of young coeds with their suitors in a hospital and hiding in dorm rooms, but the dominant focus is still on some well rehearsed shtup sessions, pubic censored but clever. Fans of the Nikkatsu films will enjoy this and Sex Hunter: 1980 because it follows some common genre tropes and sex scene setups followed by comic relief when you really want to be cumming relief.

I recommend both movies to those of you who hate pubic hair, love Asian puerno and have a thing for very strange sexual situations. (So everyone).
