Gun Woman (Scream Factory Blu-ray Review)

What is Gun Woman? It’s one of those Scream Factory titles that comes out of nowhere. I’ve never heard of it. It wasn’t one of their retro selections that get so much pomp and fanfare. It’s also not a Chiller/SyFy original. Gun Woman falls into that other category. Asian Thriller/Horror picture. In fact it’s hard to say that Gun Woman is even a Horror picture. It truly is a work of Dark Fantasy with revenge picture tendencies and Crime/Thriller hallmarks. Fast paced and full of a juicy violence. One thing I can tell you for certain about this title, it’s friggin awesome.

Gun Woman is like watching a child pull apart a Lego building only to create a new, better version of that Lego building with more solid support structure and full of booby traps. Basically you follow a woman who has been purchased and rehabbed into a weapon of a man hell bent on pure revenge. How is she a weapon? That’s part of the charm of Gun Woman. Her purpose, mission and volatility is gradually exposed through a series of lessons, learned by the namesake gun woman. It’s actually quite starting, insanely fantastical but somehow believable.

This picture if filled to the brim with gore and blood. Not just any blood either. By the end of this movie you’re not sure whether you have a hard on or if someone cut off your pecker. It’s like watching the live action equivalent of a Crossed comic book with nudity and splatter amalgamated into a luscious mound of pubic hair and Carrie-White-Prom Dress. Plenty of disturbing sexual fetishes round out this debauched and unexpectedly entertaining slop fest.

My initial feeling was that it didn’t belong on the Scream Factory label and that it was really a Shout title with some cross appeal. After much consideration I think you’d find this in the same space as Audition, a beautiful work of Asian Horror and thus my mind has been changed. It’s high action and intense through the finale though the initial build is slow and wanders as we uncover the motive of our protagonist/teacher. In that sense this feels like a traditional Japanese revenge flick, and while most of the newer revenge flicks of this type seem to get lost on me (I prefer the Shaw Bros) Gun Woman has a payoff that splits bodies and blows holes through brains. Good pick up for Scream Factory.

This is from the same director as Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf coming to you from Synapse on Blu-ray. The female lead is a former adult star who isn’t afraid to bare all including but not limited to her ultimate weapon, her body. You may remember her from Machine Girl, the Rape Zombie series, Dead Sushi or Helldrive to name a few.

Extras include:

Audio Commentary With Writer/Director Kurando Mitsutake And Actress Asami (In Japanese With English Subtitles)

From Scream Factory:

A brilliant doctor vows revenge on a crazy sadistic killer following the murder of his wife… and devises the perfect assassination plan by turning a young woman into the most lethal assassin the world has ever seen. This outrageous plan will unfold in the killer’s heavily fortified underground lair. The lethal assassin will be placed into a temporal state and sent into the facility as a dead body… but when she wakes, it is everyone else in the compound who will be deprived of their lives.

But there is one catch. What will she use as a weapon? The staff of the underground facility is armed with weapons that have fingerprint authentication systems so it’s impossible for her to use their weapons. The doctor’s genius plan is to surgically hide the gun parts into the woman’s body, so she can rip off her stitches when she wakes, take out the parts, assemble the gun and become the ultimate Gun Woman.

From director Kurando Mitsutake, who dazed genre fans with his “Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf” comes an original kick-ass film, Gun Woman, starring rising Japanese action star Asami (The Machine Girl, Dead Sushi). Watch crazy meet crazier in this no-holds-barred revenge flick!
