Thoughts on Contracted: Phase II (IFC Midnight VOD)

Oh the juicy goodness off Contracted. Yes we do love our Body Horror with a perfect balance of wanton sexuality and gorgeous juicy maggoty genitals. That’s what we loved about the original Contracted. It made us sick and then finished strong after building a nice relationship with our female lead. Contracted 2 picks up on a side story built around the female lead from Contracted. Yes, it's called Contracted: Phase II, but I'm going to just refer to it as Contracted 2.  Can it possibly gross out while maintaining a level of tension and unease that the original brought wholesale? IFC Midnight brings Contracted 2 to limited theatrical and VOD release this month. It’s a ride you’ll most likely be familiar with although it has a few new twists and turns.

What played out as a cautionary tale about sex in the original Contracted continues in Contracted 2. You have the same basic underlying message. Without that jimmy hat, you’re gonna turn into a rotting corpse and kill everyone you love. Show that in your health classes and at least a few guys will reach for their rubbers. Contracted 2 is effective in conveying the same story, following a male character in lieu of the strong female lead from the first picture. Then we get to watch him rot and transform though we actually know what’s happening this time. We watch him try to cheat the inevitable decay in clever ways and search for a cure. Will he find it? Will he spread the disease even though he is fully aware of the implications of doing so? That’s why you watch Contracted 2. To see if you’ll get Contracted 3. To see if anything can be grosser than maggots falling out of a vagina (I’m just being honest here my little barf bag sitters).

If you enjoyed the first Contracted, you’ll enjoy Contracted 2 but not because it’s novel. It has some solid gross outs with good performances, twists and emotive scenes that work. Do not expect this movie to reinvent the Body Horror subgenre or think you’ll get a twist that makes it truly special. It’s just a good movie, not a great, innovative piece of physical Horror.

Don’t eat Chinese food or anything with rice before viewing. Bring a barf bag, perhaps a smaller one than you brought to the original Contracted.

In limited theatrical and available on VOD now.

From IFC Midnight:

It’s spreading… After Contracted unleashed the world’s most horrifying virus, this sequel picks up the story as newly infected Riley (Matt Mercer) races against time to contain the outbreak, even as it ravages his own body. As he digs deeper into its origins, Riley attracts the attention of a Detective (Marianna Palka, Good Dick) who doubts his innocence, and BJ (Morgan Peter Brown, Absentia) himself, who holds the key to the virus – and perhaps the destruction of mankind as we know it, leading to a blood-soaked finale you have to see to believe. Hang on to your barf bags, buckle up, and get ready for the genre ride of the year.
