This year I had the chance to check out The Final Girls. Boy did I love that one. Meta Horror with a slasher theme and a focus on some fun kills with plenty of comedy to keep the whole thing rolling. I recommend The Final Girls. When I then heard that a movie called Final Girl was to be released I was skeptical. Was this an Asylum style release that was playing on the title of a more major release in order to intercept some of its viewers into a shitty knock off that was going to have a title that was the same and otherwise be a bunch of CG trash? Nope. I assure you that that is not the case. Final Girl is a completely separate movie with no ties to The Final Girls. It is a serious Thriller with a great deal of exquisite violence, charming performances that really get you going and a fun revenge story line that feels novel. You won’t want to miss this one from Cinedigm.
You may remember Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine, but she has changed and her role in Final Girl is powerful and transformative. Yes she was in Zombieland which gives her Horror street cred, but this is a movie that takes her to the focal point of the movie as an exquisite purveyor or physical violence and strange emotive acting that makes you love and fear her. She is complemented perfectly by Wes Bently who was a genius in American Beauty but has shown up again in more recent days in American Horror Story Hotel with a strong performance. He has always been the master of the quiet creeper, but even more so he shows true empathy without expression and through dialogue delivery that simply makes you feel terrified.
There are some strong fight sequences that really stand out and moments of perfect psychedelia that will leave you with a few questions right before the questions are bashed firmly through your skull.
Every night, four boys trick a young, blonde girl into meeting them in the forest for a date with the intention to hunt and kill her. One night, Veronica (Abigail Breslin) is selected and when the hunt begins, the boys soon realize that they messed with the wrong girl.
