My favorite 90’s Horror movie is In the Mouth of Madness. I love me some John Carpenter, and Sam Neil plays crazy as well as he plays intrigued insurance adjustor. While I adore The Frightners and Halloween H20 and From Dusk Till Dawn, but In the Mouth of Madness has the Lovecraftian thing down better than most Lovecraft movies before or since.
I remember when In the Mouth of Madness was released on video I kept comparing it to Lord of Illusions. For some reason I thought the two movies required some epic battle for my eyes both having to do with older, ancient evils. Of course I enjoy Lord of Illusions, more so now than when it hit on video, but I can remember cheering In the Mouth of Madness from the first watch.
There are brief, imperfect moments based on some of the tech used for effects during this period, but for the most part the overall feeling and look still scares me to this day. Sam Neil locked up in an asylum with crosses all over the place is a brilliant aesthetic.
The only thing left to do is to write some Sutter Cane books and put them out under the pseudonym. Well done John Carpenter. I’m still not sure if this one beats out Prince of Darkness as my favorite JC movie, but it does on occasion hit the top of the chart for me.
