Stung will be in my top ten releases of 2015 this year. Guaranteed. I adored this movie when it initially hit and tried to encourage folks to catch it before the long winter until it hit Blu-ray. I didn’t know quite where it would land, but IFC Midnight and Scream Factory are putting it out on Blu-ray for everyone’s benefit. That means you get to enjoy a quality disc with two variations of the artwork and as much creature feature gore as you can muster. This ain’t your daddy’s giant bug movie!
What I adore about Stung and what makes it to my best of list for this year is the relationship between our two leads. They have this charisma and playful charm that works. It reminded me most of Shawn of the Dead in that regard. One might even consider Stung, a Romantic Comedy… with Giant Wasps much in the same way that Shawn of the Dead was considered a Romantic Comedy… with Zombies. Once you get past that there are some truly excellent character interactions with some time tested character actors that really turn on the juice. Lance Henriksen gives a perfect performance as a drunk, well to do, public official who hands out great advice, offers courageous insight and takes no shit. He provides strong moments of comedy in between kicking ass.
The effects are the perfect blend of computer generated images and practical. This makes the transformations strong, the gore hearty and the splat fully packed. The CG is used to accentuate the practical effects and are used when a practical effect might not be feasible. That’s exactly how it should be done in Horror movies. Stung does this exceedingly well. Bodies ripped apart. Giant stingers. Even a few surprise kills, and what’s more… the hive minded bugs are rather intelligent. The origin story of this giant wasps makes this a classic science vs. nature parable.
I prefer the original artwork which is included as a reversible cover, but the updated art may show just how fun this movie is as opposed to how tense it can make you. The making of featurette shows you some of the effects creation and also provides interviews with the main cast and backs up the story a bit. It’s a new movie that looks great in HD.
You like giant bug movies of the 50’s and you like creature feature effects and gore, but maybe you also want to fall in love a whole lot? Well Stung is perfect for you. This another smart release by IFC Midnight and Scream Factory that caters to the Horror fan without being overly pretentious or ordinary.
You can order Stung from Scream Factory now.
From Scream Factory:
A fancy garden party goes terribly wrong after a local species of wasps mutate into giant predators. It's up to Paul (Matt O’Leary, Mother's Day, The Lone Ranger) and Julia (Jessica Cook, Awkward), two catering staffers at the high-society event, to stop the killer creatures – an effort that kickstarts a budding romance between the two. This buzzingly fun thriller also stars Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Pumpkinhead) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Pacific Rim, Transcendence).
