We should probably set your expectations correctly for this double feature release. You are dealing with two movies made by Empire Pictures. For some of you that means you understand everything you’re about to watch will be filled with copious special effects, plot holes, bad scripts and they may be the best kept secrets from the 80’s For others of you, you’ll scoff at these movies. You’ll look down on them as being imperfect, barely watchable, semi-Horror, semi-Fantasy, semi-SciFi works that aren’t even meant to be on Blu-ray. I pity that second group because inside these somewhat poorly put together films are original tales with unique effects and strong performances. You have to give them a chance.
The best thing going here is that Scream Factory has released these two movies as a double feature. That means you have a 50/50 shot of liking one of them. I though Dungeonmaster was my favorite and Eliminators felt strangely like a precursor to Manborg as created by Astron 6 many years later. Dungeonmaster is several stories sort of thrown together and what’s better? Richard Moll is in it! Keep an eye out for WASP and enjoy just how pure 80’s Dungeonmaster is. The Eliminators is just a ton of Sci-Fi goodness that goes completely over the top to try and win the day.
Both movies look pretty damn good, especially understanding that they were made by Empire. The extra packages are light, but appropriately so given the scope of the releases.
It’s a great set of two movies that feel very unique and that balance each other well with appropriate amounts of Horror and Fantasy. I hope we see more Empire releases doubling up soon.
