The Diablo 4 Murmuring Obols currency is pretty important early on if you want to grab Legendary gear without having to make it yourself through crafting and using aspects. These mysterious blue coins can be brought to one of the Purveyor of Curiosities vendors scattered across the map, and exchanged for a chance to get a precious item.

Murmuring Obols can also be used to buy Whispering Keys that unlock the Silent Chests you might happen upon while exploring Sanctuary. Aside from completing dungeons, this makes spending your Obols one of the best ways to acquire new Legendary items and their aspects at the start of the game. With that in mind, here's how to get Murmuring Obols in Diablo 4.

How to get Murmuring Obols in Diablo 4

Early in the game, the most consistent way of earning Murmuring Obols is from random overworld events. These can spawn all over the map and can be completed solo, though they are much easier with a group. Each event has an optional Mastery requirement, and you'll net extra Obols if you complete it, meaning you can get a maximum of 35 Murmuring Obols for each event. You'll also be rewarded with Murmuring Caches—a consumable item that gives you 50 Murmuring Obols—when you complete certain quests.

This currency doesn't go into your bags, so don't bother looking for it there. Instead, you need to open your character sheet (press C or I) and click the "Materials and Stats" button to the right of your character window. A narrow window will pop out and here you can see your currency. You'll notice a cap on how many Murmuring Obols you can hold, but you can increase this through Renown and by finding Altars of Lilith.

You can find the Purveyor of Curiosities in many of the towns in Sanctuary, and you'll see that they sell random pieces of gear and a mysterious Whispering Key item. The only thing you choose about the gear you buy is the slot it can be equipped in—the rest is left to chance.

If the Purveyor of Curiosities follows the same mechanics as Kadala from Diablo 3, there's a 10% chance that the item you buy will be of Legendary quality. As the currency to buy them has a cap, you're not losing anything by taking the risk, especially as you can salvage any gear you want for crafting resources.

Once you get to Nightmare and Torment world tier, you also have a chance of acquiring Sacred items through the Purveyor. Just look for a glowing section above the question mark item icon to know which categories have a chance of rewarding you with a Sacred item.
