Guess what? Slasher made me realize that I'm not allowed to be a cynical old fool just yet. I can't just dismiss shows because of their titles, and there's actually cool shit happening on the boobtube aside from my Saturday night love affair with Svengoolie and premium cable Homeland/Billions fuck fest.
Slasher is, on the surface, a modern slasher tale. Expect late 90's/early 2000's style acting and story telling though perhaps with a serious bent rather than pure tongue to cheek. It's gory with clever kills, good villain costuming and a level of mystery that is fun without being True Detective obscure. You can just watch it, feel entertained by and maybe give it a second season if the networks haven't put it on the cutting block just yet.
Give it a watch. I think it's a decent opportunity to have TV excite you without playing on proven intellectual property.

From Scream Factory:
For Sarah Bennett, home is where the horror is.
Katie McGrath (Jurassic World, TV's Merlin) stars in the thrilling first season of Chiller's first original series: Slasher. When Sarah Bennett (McGrath) returns to her small hometown, she finds herself the centerpiece in a series of horrifying copycat murders based on the grisly killings of her parents. As the murders escalate, long-buried secrets are revealed, making everyone around her a suspect… or a victim.
Brandon Jay McLaren, Steve Byers, Dean McDermott and Wendy Crewson also star in this eight-episode nail-biter, the first slice of a truly terrifying horror anthology series from creator Aaron Martin (Killjoys, Being Erica).
